The railroad came to Billeberga in 1865 with the opening of Landskrona & Hälsingborgs Järnvägar (L&HJ). After the first section of the South Trunk Line from Stockholm to Malmö opened in 1855, it became clear to city leaders in Landskrona and Helsingborg that they would sink into oblivion, if they didn’t get connected to the rapidly growing rail network. Each city wanted to build their own line to connect to the Trunk Line.
In the end they received state grants to build a common line to Eslöv, where they would connect with the Trunk Line. The line from there would then at some suitable point fork into a line to Landskrona and one for Helsingborg. After surveying, it was decided to place that forking point in Billeberga.
L & HJ operated through passenger trains (local and fast) from Eslöv to Helsingborg. In Billeberga, connection was provided with trains to and from Landskrona.
In 1938 L&HJ was nationalized, along with many other private railroads. In 1949 the line was electrified. At this time the rail yard in Billeberga was also totally rebuilt into the track configuration it would keep until the late 1980s.
Train service was now available to Helsingborg, Landskrona, Eslöv, Malmö, Lund and intermediate points.
The national railway, SJ, didn’t consider the local trains profitable (even less so as they in the late 1960’s started running parallel bus services on many routes, thereby competing with themselves). At this time, service many smaller stations was abandoned, with the trains now just passing right on by.
Billeberga kept its service and continued to see healthy transfer traffic to and from Landskrona.
When the regional government took over running local trains in Skåne, the decision was made to service Landskrona via the line from Kävlinge. As a result, the line from Billeberga was abandoned in 1982, although the tracks remained in place for a number of years.
Billeberga station, platforms and tracks were still there, with the station master clearing every train coming through, but passenger trains no longer stopped. It would take several years before first limited stops were reintroduced and then finally all trains stopping again.
When Helsingborg got a new station in 1991, the through traffic from Gothenburg came through Billeberga, which now found itself as part of the West Coast Trunk Line. “The elevated status” lasted until 2001 when the new line Lund-Landskrona-Helsingborg was finished. Now Billeberga gets local traffic, plus freight trains.
The rail yard in Billeberga was drastically streamlined in the late 1980’s. The extensive track system was replaced with a main track, a passing track and a short siding track. There are now 2 platforms. The old station building still stands, but is no longer used for railroad purposes. The freight shed was torn down when the tracks were rebuilt.
